Mr Bennett has created a profound, fascinating, humorous look inside at bein' a boy in scouting in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area in the 60's and 70's. Once you pick it up its hard to put down. It is succinct, Mr. Bennet could have easily put hundreds of mostly humorous stories from his experiences in years of Scouting, but, he chose a very insightful, percipient, astute, look into what the core design of being a Boy Scout was and how that experience influenced his life for the good. Keeping its humor throughout makes it a classic that can be read in an afternoon, but, will require years to contemplate and better understand a former scout and their work, their religious beliefs, their entertainment and hobbies, for their spouses, families, and friends. We the people of the United States in order to establish a more perfect union including the Boy Scouts of America thank you Mr. Bennet for writing your book!

Reader Reviews

According to the blog "Scoutmaster," this book may be the only one ever written from many boy scouts' individual points of view rather than an outside observer's. The book's point of view derives from the method the author used to compile the information needed to write the book. It's as if Richard Bennett, a former scout himself and a subject of the book along with the others in his troop, had an epiphany one day and decided a book needed to be written that would tell and show what scouting meant to specific scouts, and in their own words. That's why interviews with his former troop members form the basis of the book's contents. In this way, the author found a new way to... More > approach the task of communicating the importance of scouting in the lives of the boys that become members of troops across the country. The implied if not stated conclusion seems to be that the Boy Scouts is a significant influence in the lives of those who participate in scouting, and in a positive way. In other words, it's hard to imagine the experience of being a boy scout doing anything but helping a young boy as he grows into manhood. Boy Scouts may not be as popular as they once were, but they should be.

Everything I needed to know,I learned in the Boy Scouts was a nice story of wonderful memories particular to one troop but, easily related to every scouts history.Scouting taught values, morality, ethics, citizenship, common sense, respect for others, nature and life in general. These memories brought forth in the book are less and less celebrated today but, scouting still holds on to the values that made America great. If every boy had a scouting background, we would be in a far better place as a nation today. Read this free book and get a good sense of what we, as a nation , once enjoyed.Makes me wish I was 12 years old again.
